Remade Institute Awards Key PCB Recycling Technology Project to Virginia Tech and Phinix LLC

Remade Institute recently awarded a project contract to a research team comprising Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Lead) and Phinix, LLC. The project is designed for recovering valuable materials from end-of-life printed circuit boards (PCB).

The project ‘Low-Concentration Metal Recovery from Complex Streams Using Gas-Assisted Microflow Solvent Extraction (GAME)’ aims to develop a significant technology towards economic and productive e-waste recycling.

The objective of this project is to develop GAME for efficient and cost- effective extraction and purification of low-concentration, high-value metals from complex streams. The successful development of this technology will contribute to the production of high- purity precious metals from end-of-life PCBs of various sources. GAME uses three phases (aqueous, organic, and gas) to achieve an efficient separation in a confined microchannel.

The technology can reduce the loss of metal during physical separation of various particles in traditional mechanical recycling methods.
